Neighborhood Ministries
Gladys Morris

Neighborhood Ministries was started in the late 1980's by a group of women from the United Methodist Church of Perkins as a way to help local Farmers buy hay and other necessities. The first donation was made by Frankie Sharpley and the program quickly grew into a much larger ministry. The Food Bank was added to Neighborhood Ministries and now services families of our community on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Food is also delivered to home bound participants who without this service might not have a way to obtain groceries. The ministry has feed hundreds of people in Perkins, Tryon, Agra, Carney, Ripley, Coyle, and other areas.

The neighborhood ministries have helped put a baseball glove on a small child, help put a young Mother through Nursing School, bought gas to get people to work, put tires on cars, paid electric bills and gas bills, bought medicine for people, and steel toed boots for someone they could go to work.

Neighborhood Ministries also helps with the community Thanksgiving baskets which have grown to serve over 150 families and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner which feeds around 250-300 people. The food for the Thanksgiving dinner is donated by the congregation and cooked by members of the church who gladly donate their time. This is a fun filled experience for all who take part. Dinner is served on the Friday or Saturday before Thanksgiving.

-We get food delivered for the Food Bank around 9:30am to the church on the 1st and the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We gather at the church around 8:00am to start putting together the sacks, and meet back around 5:30pm to start handing out the bags at 6:00pm. We can always use help to unload and put sacks together.

-We pick up Panera Bread on Tuesday nights after 10:00pm so we can always use people to pick it up and deliver it to the church to be sorted and wrapped up.

-Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets are given out one week to ten days before the Holiday depending on when the food arrives from Harvest 2 and Kickin Childhood Hunger.
