For All the Saints

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,

who thee by faith before the world confessed,

the name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, alleluia!

For All the Saints, UMH 711

Pastor Greg Laurie tells the story that a little girl was asked in her Sunday school class what a saint was. Thinking of the stained glass pictures of the saints, she said, "They are the people the light shines through." What a wonderful way of understanding those who have gone before and whose faith continue to illuminate our lives and guide us on our faith journeys. The month of October is celebrated as the Season of the Saints leading up to All Saints Sunday Day on November 1. This month we will pay tribute to some mighty figures of faith with a sermon series, “Saintly Sisters,” celebrating four amazing women who lived truly remarkable lives dedicated to God and to neighbor.

Who are the saints in your life, the people who have illuminated your growth in the faith? Perhaps they are parents or grandparents, Sunday school teachers, youth group leaders, teachers, community leaders, friends. Maybe you were transformed by a chance encounter or by someone whose life you have read about or studied. We are all formed and impacted not only by our experiences but also by the witness of Christ we see in others.

During this Season of the Saints, I invite you to spend time each week exploring some of the fascinating people who are recognized as saints. Use this link to discover more: Lives of the Saints. You can also learn about some of the amazing women who have been instrumental in our Methodist tradition here: Women in UM History. Most importantly, take a break each day to reflect on those people in your life that the light of God shines through, and give thanks for them. Where would any of us be without them? Even better, honor their gifts by committing yourself to live more faithfully each day so that you allow God’s light to shine through you more brightly to illuminate others.

I look forward to hearing about the saints in your lives and to celebrating our “Saintly Sisters” with you in worship each week. It is a blessing to serve with you to the glory of God’s Kingdom.

With joy and thanksgiving,

Pastor Laura
